Visualizing Pausanias’s <i>Description of Greece</i> with contemporary GIS

Abstract This progress article focuses on an overview of the potential and challenges using contemporary Geographic Information System (GIS) applications for visual rendering analysis textual spatial data. The case study is ancient traveling narrative, Pausanias’s Description Greece (Periegesis Hellados) which was written in second century CE. First, we describe process converting volumes to data a customized version open-source digital semantic annotation platform Recogito. Then focus shifts implementation collected organized number GIS applications: namely Google Maps, DARIAH Geo-Browser, Gephi, Palladio ArcGIS. Through empirical experimentation with their different platforms, our paper charts ways may be implemented cast new light understandings identity, space, place.
